How it Feels

The week of the final purchase

Well this week a lot is happening – we have just paid a big chunk towards the final payment and paid the Dutch solicitor – all boring stuff like the boat has to be de registered in holland before re registered on the Small Ships Register for the UK – we need evidence that their is no outstanding finance on it from the seller and we need proof that we have paid the VAT  – its all Pay Pay Pay at the moment – the list is endless –  the lettering on the boat – the solicitor – the lifting out on a crane for a survey – the survey and the survey of the works following the survey!  The new Bimimi (sun cover) the delivery crew, the insurance, the marinas in Portsmouth and Portugal, the Dogs injections, the safety equipment (£5k and counting) the sailing clothes – Henry Lloyd Elite Oilskins x 2!  Dog and People Life jackets, Charts, Van Hire to move our stuff out of London to Leeds, Flares, all that and still no Bacardi – good thing the owner left a bottol on board.   I have just booked my ferry from Portsmouth to Santander for May and Bear and me – one way!! Brittany Ferries do a dog friendly cabin where we can all sleep together – I will let you know how that goes!

This week it all feels very real and surreal at the same time.  There are so many things to think about that it is hard to focus on the adventure.  In 10 days we move out of our London home and head north to unpack – before that we will be visiting MAGIC in Portsmouth to unpack things – then sadly we have to leave her to finalise the move out of London and prepare for our visit to Manchester and Nun Monkton. Then on the 6th November we will drive to the boat and that will be our ‘official move in date’ i wonder what our address will be ?? Magic, Portsmouth Marina?? anyway back to the lists for me oh yes and watching the EURO exchange rate – who would have thought that making a dream come true could be filled with so many dreary things!!

  1. It all sounds so exciting Tina 🙂 The ferry to Santander is excellent – we travelled to Spain with Lola in a pet friendly cabin and it was brilliant. I’ll be following you all on your blog as you travel the high seas – enjoy and take care x

    • Hello Lovely Isobel – thank you for that – I had heard mixed reviews about the ferry so your reassurance is most welcome. I was wondering if we might see Mark and the crew sail past in Magic and then I thought I hope I dont as that would mean he was rather too close to the ferry. I depart on the evening of the 29th and Mark is hoping to as well although he is going to wait for optimal weather windows. With Bear and May and I going by ferry and car and Mark in Magic with the crew it will be a bit like a weird form of Top Gear race – I am going to go slowly from Santander to Lagos – still researching which route

  2. On our bookshelves is a 5th ed 2005 Sell up and sail : pursue the dream by Bill and Laurel Cooper. There are some very handy checklists for equipment etc. They have now retired but had a wonderful “can-do” attitude http://www.yachtingmonthly.com/news/535838/sell-up-and-sail-authors-come-ashore.
